The West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP) is one of Victoria’s most ambitious infrastructure developments, built to alleviate congestion and deliver a critical second river crossing to the west of Melbourne. Central to this mega-project are the massive steel bridge sections fabricated by ZPMC (Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.) in Nantong, China—engineered for precision and scale, then shipped to Australia across 38 coordinated voyages.
The appointed EPCM of the Project was a Joint venture of CPB contractors and John Holland Construction. These two key tier one operators relied on the performance and execution capabilities of Lofte Groups Team to ensure the project would be delivered on time.
Each bridge span, weighing from 150 tonne up to 454 tonne for the large portals were pre-fabricated for streamlined assembly, was transported more than 8,000 km to the Port of Melbourne aboard specialised heavy-lift vessels. The logistical complexity required precise execution, regulatory compliance, and integration across multiple time zones and jurisdictions.
Lofte Group was engaged as the marine supply chain and stevedoring service provider to coordinate the importation and landside interface of the Port operations Lofte delivered a full-scope, turnkey solution:
Lofte’s marine logistics solution was critical to the on-time and risk-managed delivery of the bridge components. The group’s responsiveness, detailed planning, and experience in complex infrastructure ensured successful integration into one of Australia’s largest transport undertakings.
