The Spark North East Link Project represents one of the largest investments in road infrastructure in Victoria’s history. A critical element of the project is the deployment of massive Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), essential for creating the twin road tunnels connecting Melbourne’s M80 Ring Road to the Eastern Freeway. Lofte Group played a key role in the complex importation, stevedoring, and transport logistics for these TBMs.
The TBMs, consisting of multiple oversize modules, were delivered across two dedicated heavy-lift vessel operations. Each unit required meticulous discharge, secure laydown, and secondary movement coordination. The need for dual laydown sites—one within the port and one external—added logistical intricacy, with tight delivery schedules and infrastructure interfaces.
Lofte Group was engaged as the stevedoring and landside logistics provider, coordinating the discharge, inspection, and transfer of Tunnel Boring Machine components from the vessel to a port laydown area, then to a secondary storage and staging facility. This involved complex planning and safe execution under high-risk operating condition.
Lofte Group’s execution ensured the timely, secure, and regulation-compliant delivery of critical TBM components. With zero incidents and full schedule alignment, the operation was delivered to the highest safety and performance standards—reinforcing Lofte’s reputation for managing large-scale, high-risk marine logistics programs.
